Arteta Applauds a More Dependable Squad and Reveals Kai Havertz Setback.
The Gunners' boss remains confident that his team can continue to cope with fitness issues following disclosing that attacker Kai Havertz is not ready for a few more weeks.
Extended Absence for Havertz
Havertz has been out since August due to knee surgery. Hoped to be available at the start of this month, Arteta revealed the player encountered a problem when advancing his training and could not progress “the required stage.”
“Our experience helped us build a squad that is far more dependable and has greater depth,” Arteta said.
Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash
This development presents a selection headache for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. A decision is required between sticking with Mikel Merino, who scored as a makeshift striker on Sunday, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly after a fitness issue off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus remains available after 11 months out.
Defensive Concerns Linger
Further fitness issues surround centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the weekend encounter. Consequently, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to start again in the heart of the defence for the table-toppers.
Arteta believes the significant outlay on reinforcements during the summer has placed the club in a far better place to deal with such setbacks.
Squad Depth Key to Premier League Pursuit
Questioned if a larger pool of players was helping their title quest, his response was positive. “Absolutely, as this campaign has been worse in certain positions, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he added.
“Our previous experiences taught us that we have to use players in different positions, and they have to be able to fulfil different roles if we aim to challenge at the top. And the example of Mikel Merino.”
Arteta's Support for Suffering Star
Addressing the complication noted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave more insight. “He followed all protocols. He could not go to the required step and now the signs are like we have unlocked that.”
The manager conveyed his personal desire to welcome him back. “The team is keen to have him. I mean, he is a footballer who, for me, I love so much for his contributions to the team, but his personality, his attitude. I watch him struggle while sidelined.”
