Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
