Barry Manilow Will Have a Procedure for Cancer in His Lung.
Barry Manilow announced that he has been diagnosed with a cancerous growth in his lung and is set to have surgery.
Spot Found in Initial Phase
The 82-year-old singer, famous for his series of high-spirited hits from "Mandy" established him as one of pop music’s cherished showmen, will have surgery to take out a section of lung tissue in an effort to combat the disease, which is at an early phase.
“For those who have been following, I recently suffered from six weeks of bronchitis followed by a relapse of another five weeks.
“Even though I was past the infection and performing again for my residency, my excellent physician requested an MRI just to be certain that there were no issues.
“The MRI identified a malignant lesion on my lung that must be removed. It’s incredible chance (and a great doctor) that it was caught so early.”
Rescheduled Shows
He has rescheduled a number of forthcoming shows, but indicated he would be on stage again by the February holiday for his long-running residency at his Vegas home.
He went on to say: “The physicians do not believe it has spread and I’m taking tests to support their conclusion. So, that’s it. No chemotherapy. No radiotherapy. Just chicken soup and classic TV.
“I’m looking forward to until I return to my familiar venue in Las Vegas for our Valentine’s weekend concerts.”
A Long Career and Personal Life
Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a show on the Las Vegas Strip. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the public eye and publicly identified as gay in 2017, after marrying his manager and long-term partner confidentially in 2014.
The couple were in a private relationship for over 35 years. Last year, Manilow spoke about how vital Kief had been to him during his explosion in popularity in the 1970s.
“When my fame skyrocketed, it was just hectic. And, you know, returning to an lonesome hotel suite, you can get into a lot of difficulty if you, you know, you’re by yourself repeatedly,” he said.
“But I found my partner right around when it was taking off. And I didn’t have to go back to those lonesome rooms. I had a person to be vulnerable with or to celebrate with.
“I hope that newcomers today don’t have to go back to those rooms by themselves, because you might succumb to pitfalls. I never did. But it was quite isolating until I met Garry. And then it was a shared adventure.”
