Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Halted Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
One of the co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated that parent company Unilever prevented the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced that he will personally create this new product within a personal collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing disagreement among the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders maintain that the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur announced via an Instagram video how he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for the product's name and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its colors, that mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that was first established in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts plus Future Plans
Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which the company was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, after decades of involvement, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been compromised following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
