Democrats Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty

Democratic officials expressed outrage after the ex-president accused a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their publication of a contentious video.

The Message That Provoked the Dispute

The video footage, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who in the past worked in armed forces or security capacities.

"Like us, you all made an oath to protect and defend this founding document," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation don't only come from overseas, but from right here at home. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline improper directives, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."

The Former President's Incensed Reply

The video message appeared to prompt a furious reply from the previous commander-in-chief.

On later in the week, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate message, he wrote: "This represents really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Officials Answer

Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader released a combined announcement condemning the comments.

"Partisan aggression has no role in America," they wrote. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our country with exceptional loyalty and excellence. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and harmful threats of violence against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also stated that they had been in communication with security officials "to make certain the safety of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away delete these unhinged online messages and retract his dangerous rhetoric before he leads to violence," the declaration stated.

Representatives' Defiant Response

The officials who were featured in the video also published a declaration.

"We identify as former service members and security experts who love this United States and swore an pledge to protect and uphold the national charter of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we intend to keep it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental responsibility."

"What's most telling is that the president deems it subject to penalty by execution for us to reiterate the law," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the constitution and duty to follow only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."

They added: "All citizens must join forces and censure the ex-president's requests for our murder and political violence. This is a moment for moral clarity."

Further Political Responses

The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the capital punishment of public representatives."

He continued: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this immediately and without qualification."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very harmful, you have prominent officials of Congress telling troops to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in US history."

The GOP official also according to sources informed the press that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to analyze the wording and decide all that."

White House Reaction

During a administration briefing on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Does the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative replied: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She said: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the command structure, and if that system is compromised, it can cause casualties, it can result in chaos, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
