Gareth Southgate Reveals Priorities on Mentoring Young People Rather than Returning to Coaching
Gareth Southgate has stated that he is avoiding a return to football management, noting that it would be challenging to recreate the unique sense of purpose he felt as head of the Three Lions.
The former coach indicated his aim to focus his energy toward supporting the youth and addressing what he called a widespread pessimistic outlook currently found in the country.
Embracing Different Paths Outside of The Sport
Speaking on air, Southgate was prompted regarding speculation linking him with vacant management roles in the Premier League and elsewhere.
“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he responded. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”
Dedication to Role Models
Leading up to the publication of his forthcoming publication, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, Southgate emphasized that he is highly enthusiastic about providing role models for teenagers, drawing on insights from his period as head coach of the national side between 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.
He feels that his time leading the national team, during which the team transformed from being strongly criticized to greatly admired, holds wider relevance.
“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he noted. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”
Parenting and Shaping the Next Generation
Speaking from his experience as a father, he remarked: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”
He went on: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”
Unity Over Division
He insisted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often emphasizes division.
“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he commented. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”
His new release, the book Dear England, is set to present deeper reflections on management and national identity inspired by his remarkable career.
