Gavin Newsom States He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028

The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.

"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," Newsom commented when questioned about contemplating a presidential run post the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."

Newsom's tenure as California's leader ends in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he emphasized that any determination is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has emerged as a prominent opponent of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost the party's House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This action has invited attacks from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a recent appearance on a major news network. The secretary revealed a strategy to withhold federal funds from California and suggested revoking the power to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut a significant sum from California," he declared, in the wake of a this week's deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that caused three deaths and four injuries.

The governor's team noted that the federal government had renewed the worker's status multiple times, which permitted him to receive a CDL under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had previously stated he was holding back $40 million from the state for ignoring English language requirements for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," Newsom's office responded in a previous release countering the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Polling Data and Political Future

A recently conducted survey found that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters believed that Newsom ought to campaign for president in 2028. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has increased to an average of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an typical level of more than 40% to under 40%.

In previous months, the governor stated while on a trip several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for 2028.

He noted his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.

"The notion that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, extraordinary," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I await who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the American people."
