Hardline Former Congressman José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile Next President.
Following a conclusive second-round vote, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Win
With over 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Agenda Built On Security and Migration
Noted for his strong socially conservative views and regard for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely centered on promises to tackle rising crime and radically restrict migration.
He consistently pointed to immigrants, especially the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the race, he issued an stern warning for them to depart before the new term begins or face expulsion.
His proposals featured U.S.-style measures such as building camps, high walls, electric fences, and strengthening the military presence on the northern border.
Part of a Regional Trend
Numerous analysts interpret Kast's victory as part of a broader rightward shift in the region, following this year's electoral results in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other analysts also view it as a continuation of the regular swing of power between left-wing and right administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Lacking a Strong Mandate
Despite his clear popular vote victory, Kast does not hold an overall majority in the legislature, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if all conservative parties are counted together.
This political situation could complicate his plans, such as a vow to cut public spending by billions within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not offered a clear explanation.
"We have numerous aspects about how a Kast administration will be that we don't know because he has not explained the way he will achieve them," noted a political science expert.
The analyst stated, "Regarding fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see adjustment measures typical of the right. But where there is much less ambiguity is on security policy, because that has been his flagship issue during the race."
