Israelis commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have assembled around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities postponed official memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but events still were held around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the provisions of the proposal.
A prominent delegate familiar with the discussions revealed that an late session of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The source said the morning session finished without tangible results, amid differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have still not deliver any significant progress," but noted that mediators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the both parties.
Key Issues in Discussions
- A lasting truce
- The trade of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies distribution
- Post-war governance of the region
Public Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young a woman - whose sibling survived the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No place seems like home now and until each abducted person come back not a single person will feel safe."
"When we see all home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their solidarity for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israelis desire the war to end in return for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In the main city, bombardments were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, area and zone districts and in the east side area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"When the dusk comes, the fear arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.
"My family are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my smallest child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."
Medical Emergency
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had received the remains of several people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
A different healthcare center in the south region of the city reported additional fatalities had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the southern area, medical staff said.
