Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Time Behind Bars
He contested the legal system and justice prevailed.
Two months after receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks destined for incarceration.
Imminent Imprisonment
The adjudicated instigator – who had been under house arrest in his mansion while a series of legal procedures and challenges proceed – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the coming days, amid mounting talk that he will be sent to a well-known high-security facility.
Past Remarks on Convicts
During Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the right-wing former military man showed scant sympathy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“Why should we give these lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be fucked, end of story. That's my opinion.”
At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to end up behind bars, the only thing required is to avoid rape, abduction or theft.”
Jail Destination Discussion
Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, a group of four this week inspected the prison in an apparent effort to dissuade the judiciary from transferring him there.
The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, claimed he expected the elderly figure to be jailed in the following week and a half and worried his location could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe gut problems – the consequence of a almost deadly assault during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – implied it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is highly critical. He won’t be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he commented, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the standard of prison meals.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells accommodating four dozen prisoners: “That is almost one meter squared per inmate.
“We conversed to the prisoners and they grumble, naturally, of the awful meals,” remarked the senator.
Allies Speak Out
He is not the sole person expressing views prior to the former president’s predicted detention.
Penning in a prominent newspaper, one more backer, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the greatest wrong in its record”.
“It represents an unfairness that gnaws the spirits of millions of Brazilians,” he stated.
Varied Public Reaction
That may be true due to the significant following Bolsonaro holds on the conservative side. However his anticipated incarceration has also gladdened the feelings of many others who feel he deserves to be imprisoned for plotting to stop the incoming president from taking power – and additionally scheming to have him murdered.
Congressman Otoni, a politician for the sitting president's Workers’ party, said: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a dungeon. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. No one desires Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to receive dignified handling – but proper handling behind bars. He cannot carry on being his own prison warden for his entire life.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years applauding the severe handling of inmates, had suddenly realized to their entitlements. “Just now has the far-right – which has consistently argued that basic rights are not for offenders – opted to tour a prison to learn what conditions are truly like,” he remarked.
“Bolsonaro is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, insulting handling”.
Possible Prison Facilities
Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently contains about 14,000 detainees, his more likely assigned facility appears to be a nearby jail for police officers and other “unique” inmates known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
His potential cell are far more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although still a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the impressive presidential palace, around 20 kilometers away.
Based on reports, the cell Bolsonaro could likely inhabit in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – approximately the size of a couple of car spots – and includes a 12 sq metre WC with a water facility and a 130 square foot balcony. “He could be permitted to have a TV and even a minibar in his quarters as long as they were donated by his loved ones,” the report indicated.
Partisan Reactions
The lawmaker denounced the talked-about proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his fate in the {
