Melbourne Storm Star Eli Katoa Ruled Out for Entire 2026 Season After Serious Head Injuries and Neurosurgery
Melbourne Storm forward Eli Katoa has been officially ruled out the complete 2026 NRL season as he focuses on rehabilitation at home in his home state, following coming back from a prolonged stay in Auckland after undergoing a neurosurgical procedure.
What Happened
The 25-year-old suffered three separate head injuries during a single match while playing for the Tongan national team in a Pacific Championship match against New Zealand. This led to seizures while off the field, necessitating urgent medical care.
A medical operation to relieve bleeding on the brain left the player hospitalized and temporarily grounded to his club base.
The team revealed recently that the forward has now come back and is recovering, having also made a brief visit to a local medical facility.
“Eli’s health and wellbeing are our number one priority,” stated the club's chief executive a team official. “It is great to have him home safely and under the supervision of our medical staff and local specialists.”
The Road to Recovery
Rodski added that the athlete is improving each day and is eager to pursuing his recovery in a home environment.
Importantly, the executive stated that there is no set timeline for Katoa’s recovery or a comeback to the field.
“After discussions with our doctor and neuro specialists, Eli won't be back to training this pre-season and won’t be available for the upcoming season,” he emphasized. “He has a lengthy recovery process in his recovery, and his focus will be on achieving complete wellness prior to contemplating any form of return to rugby league activities.”
Rodski concluded by noting that Katoa is a much loved and respected part of the squad and club, and that the entire club will rally around him and support him through his recovery.
League Investigation
The NRL is currently finalizing its investigation into the circumstances that led to Katoa’s surgery.
The powerful forward, who was named in the competition’s team of the year at the annual awards ceremony, appeared to suffer a head injury during the pregame routine for the international contest.
However, he was allowed to play in the match and suffered two additional blows to the head before being substituted in the later stages.
His state deteriorated quickly, and he required oxygen beside the field before being removed from the field on a stretcher.
The league has sought to tackle issues around concussions in the game in recent seasons, implementing stricter enforcement on high tackles and lengthening the mandatory recovery time for injured athletes.
