The British tennis star secured the most notable win of his professional journey by rallying from a set down to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had earlier beaten Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory represents Norrie's initial victory over a reigning world No 1.

"Enormous. Extremely important for me," stated Norrie, who is now the newest British man in the record books to overcome a global number one. "Coming back from health issues last year, I was defeated in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just tried to appreciate my game in the closing months of the year. Norrie, seeded No 31, also ended Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine finals in a row and 17 successive Masters 1000 wins, which marked the top run of results in the young champion's young career.

Alcaraz looked to be progressing easily to a win early on as he cruised in the first set. Yet, Norrie steadily fought his way back into the game by executing with improved accuracy and engaging the Spanish opponent into extended, physical points. His unceasing steadiness and consistency steadily left its mark.

Through most of the match, the world number one performed well on serve but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old seemed especially uneasy striking his primary weapon, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for most of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 errors.
