Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using these medications must be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
