Several Hurt as Rough Air Hits Delta Flight into Sydney

A number of individuals have been injured after a Delta Airlines jet from LA to Sydney encountered significant turbulence Friday morning.

Flight DL41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson stated. Four flight attendants required medical attention.

The New South Wales Ambulance Service reported they evaluated five patients, and transported three to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included pain in the back and head pain. Those affected spanned from their 30s to 70s.

It is the most recent case of aircraft experiencing severe turbulence, with aviation specialists saying that climate change is a major factor.

On board were nearly 250 travelers and fifteen staff members on the Airbus A350, the Delta spokesperson added, stating that the plane landed "safely and normally" at Sydney Airport at 06:48 local time on the day in question.

The NSW Ambulance Service indicated they were alerted just only 180 seconds ahead of the plane arrived, and ambulances were waiting on the tarmac.

During the past year, twenty-five passengers and crew were injured when a Delta Airlines flight, on a route from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, encountered "severe" atmospheric disturbance just a couple of hours into the transoceanic journey, and was forced to make an emergency landing.

Earlier this year, those on board on a Singapore Airlines flight endured a harrowing brief five-second of severe turbulence. One passenger died and dozens were injured, as unbelted passengers were thrown from their seats and crashed back down.

Turbulence is fairly routine during flights, and while occurrences of rough conditions seem to be rising, they are remained quite uncommon.

Research indicates that there are approximately five thousand cases of severe or worse turbulence every year, out of a sum of in excess of 35 million aircraft departures that now take off globally.

Severe turbulence is described as when the up and down movements of a jet passing through unstable air exert more than 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - a strong enough force to lift you out of your seat if you weren't wearing a restraint.

As global warming shifts atmospheric conditions, researchers alert that commercial aviation could become less smooth: warming trends and shifting wind patterns in the upper atmosphere are likely to boost the frequency and intensity of significant turbulence.
