The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting
At least 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.
The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
