The Duke of York surrenders his honor as the Duke.
Prince Andrew is surrendering his titles, including the the Duke, he has stated in a individual message.
He has been under increasing attention over his links with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, with requests for the monarchy to take action against him.
That now seems to have led to the royal deciding to of his own accord return his designations and to give up participation of the prestigious order.
In his statement he said he continued to "vigorously refute the claims against me".
"In consultation with the sovereign, and my immediate and wider family, we have agreed the continued accusations about me divert from the work of the monarch and the royal household," said a statement from Prince Andrew.
"I have chosen, as I always have, to put my responsibility to my relatives and nation first.
"I stand by my resolution five years ago to step back from royal engagements.
"With the monarch's consent, we think I must now go a further step. I will therefore no longer hold my designation or the honours which have been granted to me. As I have said before, I firmly refute the claims against me."
The royal has encountered a series of scandals, including a legal case he settled with an accuser, doubts about his money matters and his association with an alleged Chinese spy.
He will remain a prince - but will cease to be the York's Duke, a title granted from his the late Queen, the late Queen Elizabeth.
He had already ceased to be a "participating figure" and had lost the use of his royal style and no longer was seen at state occasions. His role now will be even more reduced.
His former spouse will be known as Sarah and no longer the Duchess, but their daughters will persist to have the designation of princess.
The royal has faced severe attention over his associations with notorious figure the financier, more lately involving doubts about when he had truly severed contact.
In his media discussion, Prince Andrew had said that he had ended all ties with the financier after they had been seen together in New York in the end of 2010.
But emails sent in early 2011 later came to light implying that the prince had in private continued in touch with the financier, including swapping a communication: "Stay in contact and we'll have further interactions soon!"
There had been mounting displeasure in the royal household at the scandals that remained to envelop the prince.
Next week a late publication by Giuffre will be issued which is likely to bring further focus on the royal's involvement with the plaintiff and Jeffrey Epstein.
