The Latest Casual Playlist Ignites Intense Discussions Over Bots, Experience Points, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, the game developers launched a new game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option mirrors the standard Breakthrough format but includes several key adjustments:
- Every squad has just 8 human participants, with the remaining made up of 32 bots.
- Activities done by human gamers grant complete experience points, while AI activities offer lower rewards.
- Just a pair of maps can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Features like Dogtags, accolades, and career stat updates have been turned off.
So essentially, the playlist lives up to its name: it's a laid-back take of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume there's nothing wrong, as it provides more options for gamers looking for different ways to have fun with the title. However, if video games have taught us anything, it's that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, many BF6 fans are upset.
Player Responses: Anger to Support
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the errors of your rivals," reads a response to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking idea," says a different user. Meanwhile, in community forums, one user remarks, "It's unclear where we are going with this game," and another details everything they believe to be problematic in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this AI-heavy playlist."
However, amid the criticism, some gamers explaining how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's very fun to practice, human participants keep it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," reads one Reddit comment. "This subreddit fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and don't play this game 24/7. Allow them to find a middle ground," states another. One reply on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is great for me," while someone else applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Valid Concerns and Community Feedback
Despite the support, there are valid points to complain about the new mode. A few folks have pointed out that it could increase wait times even longer for different playlists because of the sheer number of playlists currently available. Similarly, some areas already encounter mostly bots in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a minimum number of human gamers, despite it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.
Lastly, one of the biggest grievances is that Battlefield Portal was promised to offer full XP, even against bots, but that got canned when they tried to eliminate XP farming from the system. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base compromising in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. A different user labels this addition as the developers "dropping the ball so hard, I experienced so much fun in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Occur?
Should Battlefield Studios has proven anything to date with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and responding to feedback. Assignments being too difficult got fixed very quickly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, if their data indicates this new playlist is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to change it again.
