The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
