The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the newest animated series from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
