The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial European tie against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," said Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his age and experience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team chase future success.

Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
