Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has competed in the main draw.

Establishing a New Record

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
