While Beachgoers Ran From Violence, Viral Photo Shows Lifeguard Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Site.
Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, views the renowned beach as her own backyard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, similar to other others in the area, detected cracking sounds echoing around the neighbourhood.
“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Exiting her home, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw told her trouble had occurred.
Positioned on the street, speaking to a pair who had rushed up the incline still dripping wet, she heard someone moving up at her rear. The person was a beach patrol officer, dashing in the direction of Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.
“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one moving in the direction that the crowd was trying to get away from, and hauling that sizeable pack and without footwear … He moved towards something that undoubtedly every part of you would tell you to go in the reverse way.
“Just no hesitation, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”
A Symbol of Bravery During Crisis
The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of courage in the wake of the violent incident.
Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, law enforcement and paramedics caring for dozens of those hurt.

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many permanent beach safety officers, said that the staff acted heroically from the second the violence commenced through to late that night.
“There have been so many moving accounts, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is remarkable,” said a local official.
“The team demonstrate selflessness every day in ensuring our world-famous shores protected for the public, but what we saw on that day should be commended.
“While we mourn and grapple with the horror of this violent and horrific act of violence, I think it is vital that we consider just how much good we have observed in the midst of such hatred.”
